Why is Council making changes to Laneway 127?

Laneway 127 will become a key linking thoroughfare for pedestrians between Cowper Street and the new Southern Suburbs Community Centre and Library. Changing the way streets are used improves the quality of life. Streets become places for people, not just traffic.

Shared Zones reflect local needs and where pedestrian safety takes precedence over ease of movement.

Local councils, in partnership with Transport for NSW design and install shared zones in accordance with the Transport for NSWs Shared Zone Guidelines.

Will access to businesses on Cowper and King Street be affected by the change?

Rear access to businesses by vehicle will be maintained with the change to a shared zone.

What changes will there be for vehicle drivers?

The laneway will be one way in a northerly direction from Cowper Street (currently southerly from Greene Street) with a 10km/hr speed limit.

What type of lighting will be installed?

The laneway will have festoon lighting suspended from steel posts, located on the eastern side of the lane. This will improve safety as well as making the laneway more inviting with a pleasant atmosphere

Are there any other changes proposed?

We will install planter boxes to add colour and greenery, a speed hump for traffic calming and feature paving. Removable bollards will allow us to safely close the lane for festivals and other occasions.

When will the change to a shared zone happen?

The changes will be introduced as part of the construction of the Southern Suburbs Community Centre and Library. We will keep the community informed as to timing.

How will my feedback be used?

The project team will consider all the comments received in finalising the plan. The plan will then be reviewed by our Local Traffic Committee for review.

Recommendations of the Local Traffic Committee are then heard at the following Council meeting for determination.
